Frequently Asked Questions

  •  How many treatments will I need?

    • This answer will be different for everyone depending on what is being treated, and if a condition is chronic or acute. To start with a few, maybe 3 treatments may be recommended. Depending how the patient responds to treatment will determine how many more treatments they will need. Acute injuries may resolve quickly, while more chronic problems may take longer.

  • What does acupuncture feel like?

    • In most cases there is little to no pain at all during the insertion of an acupuncture needle. However what a patient will most likely feel is the movement of Qi, which might feel like achiness, heaviness or a tingling sensation. Also this Qi sensation has the ability to travel along the meridian or channel, for example when placing a needle in the hand, and patient may state that they feel the sensation in the elbow or shoulder and vice versa. After the needles are inserted, patients in most cases will become very relaxed. Some patients even fall asleep during a treatment.

  • How long do treatments take?

    • A treatment will take about an hour. It is important for the practitioner to ask many questions about the illness or injury, as well as other things that may be going on in the person’s life that might be contributing to the problem. Needles will be placed in the points that are appropriate for this patient, moxibustion (the herb mugwort) and fire cupping may also be used. Usually the needles will remain in for about 20 – 30 minutes. After this time the needles will be withdrawn.
